Stapelen
Stapelen
On its canal you invented skating, its well
was your first stereo set, it saw you sway to the
moon at the Breughelian fair, you lost your way in the sawdust
mosaics on procession tracks, carving your dwarf existence
in one of the giants, testing cuddliness in the pitch-dark
cavities of its rhododendrons. All fairy tale when
ouside your dreams you bet it was real.
You found the Holy Virgin in her nearby cave and
the mystery of the local blood miracle but you
rather believed in the girls’ little niches and your own
flesh and blood in a canoe on the Dommel, your snake
arms meandering round their adored little bodies. Sometimes
the church bully upset your delicate balance, driving you
and your dayfly love out of your paradise of experiment.
It is still there, your youthful land jewel, humble
fief of Brabant now you know the measure of things, odd
assortment of styles and structures you lived around,
crenallations an excuse for would-be castles. You were to learn
how the child blended into it, the boy forgot him self there,
created to fit their state as it was and continued to be.
You go back there now an then to find yourself Stapelen again.
